About the Department

The Department of English holds the special status of being the only Department that has contact with every student at the Undergraduate level. Since 1921 the succession of English faculty has been highly respected and admired.

The success of the Department till date is because of inspiring, dedicated and gifted teachers like Prof. Sitaraman B.A. (Hons)( 1957-1968), Prof. B.V. Sudaraman B.A. (Hons) (1969- 1982), Prof. A. Habibur Rahman M.A.,M.Phil., (1982-1996), Prof. A.P. Zubair M.A., M.Phil., (1997- 2001), Prof. V. Rahmatullah M.A., (2002- 2005). The commissioning of BA English in the year 2010 and MA English in 2011 under CBCS pattern has elevated the Department to the level of much appreciation.

Another feather added to the Department was publication of Foundation English Text Books for four Semesters and a Question Bank for Value Education(MCQ) which have been tailored in accordance with the present global market scenario.

To develop the speaking proficiency level of the students, a three month Course in Spoken English was introduced in the academic year 2016-2017. The enrollment of students to this Course is innumerably increasing year by year.

To create academic and career pursuit among the students we conduct Career and Personal Counseling. We train students to make PPT presentation on the general topics like “Gender Issues”, “I Have a Dream” to “Inferiority Complex” which enhances their all round practical knowledge.

Teachers of Department of English are associated with US English Access Micro scholarship Program of Regional English Language Office, US Embassy, New Delhi and conduct classes to the students of Islamiah Boy’s and Islamiah Girls’ Schools at Islamiah College since 2009. So far more than five hundred students are benefited under the scheme. We conduct Summer Intensive Progammes, Workshops and other Personality Development Programmes.

Another initiative by the Department is by signing an MoU for the term June 2016 – April 2017 with the Government Higher Secondary School, Natrampalli Taluk, Vellore District for teaching English Language to the Rural Students.

In the Academic year 2016-2017, our Department collaborated with an NGO-Restless Development, UK based International Citizen Service - a leading volunteering Program, comprised British nationals as part of the team. For the first year UG students the session focused on “How to write a Resume and Interview techniques”.

Mere teaching and writing will not make a Department a complete one without active research.

During the academic year (2015-2016), the Department gradually gained its strength in research with the help of Dr. S. Abdullah Shah who earned Doctorate Degree in 2016. Four Ph.D scholars have registered under his supervision.
Inter-School and Inter-College competitions have become the regular itinerary of our Department since 2018.

Department of English in association with ICT-Academy conducted a personalized English Diagnostic Test. 20 self- learning videos were provided to 100 students who took part in the online test at the Language Lab on 13-01-2020 and received E-Certificate of personalized report on their skill levels.

At present the Department has created a channel in YouTube to upload the videos of students and teachers’ participation in various activities and their teaching presentations.

Shaik Khader Nawaz In 3rd International ELT (English Language Teaching) Conference on No one left behind: The Role of ELT in Promoting Inclusive Growth organized Amity University and US Embassy RELO in association with AINET, Lucknow, Amity University, Lucknow, Mar 2016. Abstract [+] Teaching grammar usually gets contested responses from teachers and students. It is important and challenging for teachers whereas suffering and boring for students as quoted by Cindy Gunn & Ann McCallum. Looking back at the ELT (English Language Teaching) history of this unpopular component, the attention has clearly shifted from convex to concave focus. Teaching Grammar originated with translation followed by drilling exercises and eventually to CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). CLT is widely used and agreed upon by most language practitioners. CLT with focus on grammar is further endorsed in the form of task-based teaching. ELT or any science for that matter demands that research findings are blended with classroom practices. ELT researchers insist that teachers derive inspiration from students’ own context and practice with authentic materials. In this paper, I would like to discuss certain practical approaches to fit our non-native tempo: identifying errors - building the sentences and corrective and additive feedback techniques. These approaches are effective and they based on learner’s own context as David Nunan suggests an organic and non-linear method to teaching second language.

Abstract [+] English Language Teaching (ELT) is one of those sciences that has been evolving upbeat with technology and wisely accepting interventions in its methods. Teachers, one of the crucial stakeholders of this arena have started to adapt technology based approaches. English draws its learners who are of different age groups and have different purposes for learning the language. This calls for insight into cognition in language learning and the whole package of Applied Linguistics. This is a humongous task in itself, along with the objective of imparting language skills (basic and sub skills), a teacher can turn to L1 (native language or mother tongue) and web based resources to not only manage but to do it exceptionally well. Communicative Language Teaching, Learner Autonomy, Activity-based learning, Peer evaluations and Assessment are some of the strategies that are getting integrated into every teaching/learning day. Communicative competence generally focuses on the target language. This approach at large does not consider the use of native language. Recent applied linguistic research highlight the role of L1 in acquiring L2 (English) and establishes a framework which does not include ignoring L1. As a complement to this approach, web-based resources are available to facilitate the teaching process using the mentioned strategies. Using them which are free and authentic as well as involves participants from across the world, only increases the feasibility of well-done teaching jobs. With myriad resources available, a teacher should be able to plan a lesson wisely without alienating the target language.

Abstract [+] The concern for ecology and the continuous threat of the misuse of our environment has drawn the attention of writers in the recent days. The writings that deal with environment are known by various terms such as eco criticism, eco poetics, eco feminism, green cultural studies, environmental literary criticism etc. This paper is an attempt to highlight eco critical elements in Eugene O’Neill’s play The Hairy Ape. Abstract [+] This paper proposes to study the sufferings of seamen with reference to Eugene O’Neill’s one-act play Warnings. In fact, the playwright himself suffered a lot in his sea voyages. But he had a deep love for the sea. The play Warnings portrays the sufferings of the hero Mr. James Knapp and his family. He had spent his youth in the ship as a wireless operator for a meager salary. When Mr. Knapp informs his wife that he may become complete deaf at any time, his wife warns him not to speak about his health to the ship authorities. She is very much concerned about her husband’s job. Mr. Knapp fails to hear an important about a derelict and he becomes solely responsible for the shipwreck. Out of his guilt, he shot himself and died in the ship.

Similarly, the same media can also be misused to misguide the people by false propaganda. This may happen when the media’s freedom is not cherished in the nation. This paper proposes to discuss the role of media in focusing an issue in a positive manner and how the same issue is projected in a negative aspect, with reference to V M Basheer’s short story The World Renowned Nose.

Abstract [+] The phrases, ―drinks like a sailor‖ and ―swears like a sailor‖ imply that alcohol and sailors are inseparable. This is the case in the plays of the American playwright Eugene O‘Neill too. In almost all his plays, we find the dominant role of alcoholism. We find characters drinking to wretched excess and fight with one another. This paper attempts to highlight why the sailors are addicted to alcohol and how alcoholism affects the life of sailors in the play The Long Voyage Home (1917).

Abstract [+] The western civilization immensely dominated and covered almost all facets of the Indian culture. In fact the culture of the west and east has brought so many socio-cultural changes in India after the entry of British on the soil in 1600. The culture of the west having its direct impact on the Indian traditional and cultural heritage also was influential in the personal life of the common man in general and the elite group of Indians in particular. It’s the mass attraction towards English system education that paved way for the wide adoption of western culture by the English educated elite Indian youth. Though there are many factors behind this cultural change, yet it is the education system introduced by the British that consisted of the curricula of their own. Since it was new to the Indians and also there was no other go without learning it, they turned susceptible towards the English language, English education and thus to the western culture. The change in the Indian education system with the introduction of English language as the second one in the curricula has great impact on Indians who studied in schools and colleges. Secondly the medium of instruction in English language is also introduced by them. This system is still in practice in almost all schools at the higher secondary level and colleges across the nation.

Abstract [+] The Mammaries of the Welfare State is not merely a novel by the realist novelist of this era, but also is the theory of his bitter experiences being a bureaucrat himself. The novel draws almost all facets of the political system in the country besides sarcastically depicting the loop holes of the system. Besides stating the incapacitated situation of the protagonist, the novelist also pens at the helplessness and oppression of the downtrodden class and how they are oppressed and put aside, and misused by the higher bureaucrats even for their social rights like voting. Chatterjee distinguishes their dismayed and miserable life that of those bureaucrats who enjoy the privileges of the welfare state that is set for the welfare of the state of these people.

Abstract [+] Upamanyu Chatterjee, one of the realistic novelists today has portrayed the social dissociation and alienation of the westernized urban English educated youth through his novels, English, August: An Indian Story. It is in fact, the impact of westernization and urbanization that a person particularly from the English educated group alienates or detaches himself from the mass. He feels that he is not of their rank. It may be due to his superiority complex due to having mastery over the global language, English or his feeling of being born in a wrong country among wrong people. He feels himself an English Indian. It is the case of the protagonist Agastya Sen in English, August: An Indian Story. He is not in a position to bind himself with the mass around him either be it his office of the Indian Administration or at the pooja festival. He maintains an unknown distance from others even from his self. He is not happy either in the provincial place Madna, where he is posted as an administrative trainee or in Delhi. He is divided between these two places. He longs for peace but finds it nowhere.

Mushtaque Ahmed In Root-International Journal of Multidisciplinary Researches , , Mar 2016. Abstract [+] Upamanyu Chatterjee, the realistic novelist, has masterfully sketched the looseness of familial ties in the anglicized Indian middle class family through his sequel novels, ‘The Last Burden’ and ‘Way To Go’. The novels depict the growing distance between the English educated westernized sons and their ailing parents. Their anti-sentimental and lethargic approach towards their familial responsibilities shatters the atmosphere of family which stuns the parents. Burfi and Jamun, are the anglicized sons in these novels who consider their parents, a burden. Their queer nature makes the parents particularly the father feel that it is the western type of English education they have been provided. The novels provide a picture of familial dissociation of the members of the anglicized Indian middle class family who are alienated from one another. This paper attempts to bridge this familial gap, between parents and their westernized children who are anti-sentimental and selfish in the name of modernity, the outcome of post colonialism.

Abstract [+] Upamanyu Chatterjee’s works picturize Indian Urban scenario in every aspect. It could be gauged while reading Upamanyu Chatterjee. A keen reader would certainly come to understand the ramification of the Indian scene. There are though many Indian novelists like Mulk Raj Anand, R.K Narayan who have portrayed the Indian mind in their works yet Upamanyu Chatterjee stands unique in this case. It is his language and style that makes him distinctive among other Indian novelists. He uses rich English vocabularies to the extent that an average reader would not easily come to understand his concept. The novels of Chatterjee depict the picture of Indian society, their mind and behavior. He has a discerning eye on the Indian culture. This is evident in his fictions. The reader of Chatterjee is toured to the Indian scene in every nook and corner of his novels. He or she feels that they are not just reading Chatterjee but viewing and the Indian mass through the pages of the novel.

The entire syllabus for Semester I has been focussed on situational grammar teaching keeping away prose and poetry. Basic grammar was the first and foremost to begin from the scratch, like revisiting the past. Grammar is taught in the student's own context which he is familiar with makes him to comprehend easily.
